The small steps of a housewife with a conscience

I’m slightly nervous and definitely unsure about what is being asked of me here, but my inbuilt sense of order made it imperative to start this log on the first of the month and to wait until the first of April seemed a little foolish.

So be patient with me. See it as an adventure, a path of discovery …..or another of those phrases we feed to our kids when things are definitely NOT going according to plan!

Yes, I really am a housewife… one of a dying breed, I know. In fact, I’ll never forget being asked by one of my husband’s work colleagues what I did. I replied, full of pride (I wish - more a mix of embarrassment and trepidation) “I’m a housewife.” To which, he inevitably added “Yes, but what else do you do?”

Well, as you can see, now I do also dabble in a bit of writing. I love it and the more practice I get, the more I’ll improve! I have a large family, an untidy house, a hectic weekly schedule, Superman for a husband (well, he likes to think so!), precious moments of time to myself …….. and a conscience. Sound familiar? For years, I have wrestled with environmental issues, the challenges of fair trade, the question of organic produce…and all the other ethical issues thrown at us on a daily basis - all within the constraints of a budget, limited time and energy and, though I don’t like to admit it, the pressure to conform to the people around me. Again, sound familiar?

So what qualifies me to write this? Not a lot, really. Firstly, I am totally honest, so all I say will be based in reality. And I am taking daily small steps towards a better home, a better future, a better world. I’m sure this type of log started as a travel log, charting journeys of discovery across the world. Or maybe a scientific log, recording new secrets of science. Or a religious log, following a path of developing faith. Do you see where I’m going? Join me on my humble journey. I hope it will amuse, challenge, inspire, encourage, provoke a response. Read more three times a week on ….
